A team from British Divers Marine Life Rescue are attempting to help a juvenile pilot whale which has become stranded 20ft from the foreshore at Gypsy Brae in the Silverknowes area of Edinburgh.
A member of the public alerted the coastguard this morning after becoming concerned that the whale seemed to be swimming in circles in shallow waters.
It is thought that the whale got lost and became beached. Sand then pushed the air in the whale's lungs to one side affecting it's balance. Rescuers will use flotation devices to attempt to right the whale's balance and allow it to swim normally.
High tide is at 2.30pm when rescuers may try to get the whale back out to open water.
